What is and how long have intravenous vitamins been used for?
Myers’ Cocktail, an intravenous vitamin nutrient supplement, was formulated more than 30 years ago by John Myers, MD, a Baltimore physician. Why would you want to use IV as a way to get your nutrients?
When vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients are administered intravenously you bypass the digestive system and a much higher level of nutrients is delivered directly to your cells through the blood stream. When nutrients are taken in through the diet, they have to be absorbed through the digestive system which may not extract the optimal amount of the nutrients. This is of a particular concern to those who have gastrointestinal diseases such as celiac, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel disease, as they often have problems absorbing their nutrients due to intestinal damage.

What nutrients are in an intravenous treatment?

The standard Myers’ Cocktail consists of:
ATP is required for the biochemical reactions involved in any muscle contraction. As the work of the muscle increases, more and more ATP gets consumed and must be replaced in order for the muscle to keep moving. The synthesis of ATP requires magnesium dependent enzymes. It is important in muscle relaxation, preventing muscle cramps, heart contractility, bone health and protein metabolism.
Calcium: Important for bone health, muscle contraction and preventing muscle cramps.
Vitamin B-5 (dexpanthenol): Helps with wound healing, stress management, fatigue and is necessary for the metabolisms of fats, carbohydrates and proteins.
Vitamin B-12 (hydroxycobalamin, I also added methylcobalamine a form of B12 important in nerve health): Important in metabolism, the formation of red blood cells and the central nervous system.

Vitamin C: Two time Nobel Laureate Dr. Linus Pauling was a strong supporter of vitamin C for healing a wide variety of health problems. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant that helps the immune system ward off bacterial and viral infections. It is required for the biosynthesis of collagen, L-carnitine, and certain neurotransmitters. Collagen is an essential component of connective tissue, which plays a vital role in wound healing. Vitamin C is also an important physiological antioxidant and has been shown to regenerate other antioxidants within the body and is also involved in protein metabolism.
Other vitamins, minerals, amino acids and ingredients may be added to the Myers’ Cocktail protocol, depending on the patient’s diagnosis and overall health as well as the condition being treated.
In Graham’s case I added:
Additional magnesium, to promote muscle relaxation and energy metabolism as well as additional vitamin C, to enhance exercise recovery and the immune system to prevent illness.
Amino acids, minerals and other ingredients were added to enhance athletic performance.
Arginine: Plays an important role in cell division, the healing of wounds and injuries, removing ammonia from the body, immune function, and the release of hormones. It increases circulation and the speed of tissue recovery.
L-Lysine: Helps with tissue repair, collagen formation, and aids in the repair of surgical wounds and muscles. Is a necessary building block for all protein in the body. It also plays an important role in the body’s production of enzymes, hormones and antibodies.
Selenium: Is an essential micronutrient and antioxidant. The enzyme, glutathione peroxidase is dependent upon selenium. The glutathione peroxidase system increases as a chronic exercise training adaptation.
Zinc: An essential mineral that is involved in essential body processes such as wound healing, the immune system, protein building, and more than 100 enzyme processes in the body. Zinc helps the body manufacture the hormone testosterone. Inadequate zinc intake can cause low testosterone production, poor growth and muscle building.
